Product Review – Better Oats Oatmeal

We all know oatmeal is a great way to start your day.  It’s a filling whole grain, packed with fiber, manganese, zinc and other goodness.  Eating oats can help prevent heart disease by lowering cholesterol and help stabilize your blood sugars for the rest of the day.

Better Oats Oatmeal has made it easy for those “on-the-go,” “out-the-door” kind of people. Easy packaging, portion controlled and lots of different flavors to choose from RAW to Maple and Brown Sugar.

100% Whole Grain Oats
Naturally firm and hearty. Never over-processed and never mushy.
Real pieces of fruit
You always know what you’re getting with our fruit—real apples, peaches and strawberries. Just for fun, check the ingredients on your old oatmeal brand. Most of the strawberry oatmeal sold uses reconstituted apple bits, flavored and dyed to seem like strawberries. Same with peaches. Don’t be fooled by imposter fruits!
Real dark chocolate morsels
If you love chocolate, you’ll have to try our Lavish Dark Chocolate oatmeal. You won’t want it just for breakfast.
Thick, quick and old-fashioned oats
All the hearty and natural texture but still fast and microwavable.

My favorite is the RAW Bare as it is unsweetened and:

  • USDA Organic
  • 41 grams of whole grains per serving
  • 200 mg of ALA Omega-3 per serving
  • Organic whole grains: Oats, Barley, Quinoa, Rye, Wheat
  • Organic whole flaxseeds
  • Good source of Fiber
But for a sweet treat (not at breakfast) I do like to indulge is a tasty yet nutritious snack such as:
Lavish Dark Chocolate or Strawberries and Cream
I love that there is flaxseed included in the packets (this should always be in your oatmeal) however I would like to see this as ground flaxseed rather than whole seeds.  Ground flaxseed is absorbed better by your body.

Product Review – PB2

A couple months ago I pick up some PB2 in the HyVee health market section. I was intrigued by this powdery substance that claimed to taste like peanut butter. Now, I am kind of a peanut butter snob…in fact, J and I love pb and cottage cheese so much that we have a saying…”what peanut butter doesn’t go on, cottage cheese does.” SO TRUE!

So here’s what the website has to say:

It’s what’s not in PB2 that makes it so good for you. For starters, our special process removes 85% of the fat calories without the chemicals typically used in producing reduced fat foods. Something else you won’t find in PB2 is preservatives. What you will find is natural roasted peanut flavor that’s also available in a rich chocolate variety.

PB2: Powdered Peanut Butter

Ingredients: Roasted peanuts, sugar and salt.

2 cups: Sugar

1/2 cup: Milk

1/2 cup: Butter (can use Land O Lake natural or other healthier spread)

4 Tbsp: Cocoa

1/2 cup: PB2

3 cups: Quick cooking oatmeal

2 tsp: Vanilla

Mix sugar, milk, butter and cocoa in saucepan. Allow mixture to boil for 1-2 minutes. Remove from heat. Add all other ingredients. Drop on wax paper and freeze.

I made these the day after that big snow storm last month and let them cool in the drifts.

Besides the cookies I have added PB2 to smoothies and oatmeal and find it to be pretty tasty however, it will not be replacing my good ol‘ natural peanut butter on toast.

Until next time…

Product Review – Real Coconut Water

Taste of Nirvana
Coconut Water
Healthified Gatorade as I like to call it; coconut water is the newest craze in the health/sports world. So what’s the scoop? Coconut water contains 5 essential electrolytes: potassium, magnesium, sodium, calcium, and phosphorus. These nutrients are key players in rehydrating our tired and dehydrated bodies during and after sweaty, endurance work. An athlete will appreciate the prevention of muscle cramping and aid in recovery. You typically can find the same electrolytes in your commercial sports drinks as well as added sugars, dyes, and ingredients…..YUM!
Some other brands include: Zico, O.N.E.
The flavor of the water is….different. Sometimes I enjoy straight up and other times I find it to be a tasty addition to my protein/fruit smoothies after a sweaty bout of exercise.
Price varies: around 1-3 dollars/drink

Product Reviews – Kashi Pizza & Ezekiel 4:9 Tortillas

Product reviews
Kashi’s Frozen Pizza

As I perused the aisle of the Health Market at Hy-Vee the other day I spotted these Kashi frozen pizzas for sale. I do love Kashi products so I thought I would give it a try… I’m a sucker for a sale.

the description sounds delicious!

Although this pizza actually looked like the pizza on the box with spinach, onions, red peppers, and feta galore….it may have actually tasted more like the box too 🙂
so that may be a little harsh, but overall I will not plan on purchasing again. It didn’t really satisfy J and I for dinner although it pairs nicely with a side of veggies.
Price: about $5.99/pizza

Ezekiel 4:9 Sprouted Grain Tortilla
another favorite of mine…Ezekiel products….love the bread!
While I was at Whole Food in Omaha the other week I discovered these….
fabulous ingredient label…no HFCS, partially hydrogenated oils, or even sugar here!

Although, J and I enjoyed their nutty flavor and health benefits over regular tortillas, they tend to be a little brittle and fall apart when wrap up.
I will probably stick with my go-to brand for whole wheat tortillas, Stacey’s Organics.
Until next time….
