In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month I thought I would share an article from Eating Well Magazine titled: 5 Foods to Beat Breast Cancer
“Did you know a woman can cut her chance of cancer by as much as two-thirds with good nutrition and weight management,” says Cheryl L. Rock PhD., RD professor of family and preventative health at the University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine.
1. Salmon – It is thought the omega 3 fats in fish oil reduce inflammation, which may contribute to breast cancer. Shoot for 8 oz of oily fish (salmon, sardines, tuna) a week.
3. Olive oil – researchers in Barcelona found that olive oil’s antioxidants and oleic acid suppressed growth of malignant cells.
4. Broccoli – Sulforaphane- a compound in brocoli -reduced the number of breast cancer stem cells in mice according to research from University of MI. Eat broccoli raw of briefly steam or stir-fry. Boiling destroys the sulforaphane.
5. Coffee – (did I just here a yipee out there?) Drinking about 2 -12 oz coffees a day may lower you risk of an aggressive form of breast cancer says a May 2011 study in Breast Cancer Research. “One possibility is coffee’s antioxidants protect cells from damage that can lead to cancer,” says author Jingmei Li, PhD.
Until next time…
